Cynthia Erivo was born in Stockwell, London, England, United Kingdom to Nigerian parents. Her full name is Cynthia Onyedinmanasu Chinasaokwu Erivo.

Erivo and her sister Nicolette Erivo were young when their parents separated. After the separation, Cynthia and Nicolette were raised by their mother Edith Erivo, who was a nurse.

In 2004, Cynthia entered the University of East London in the London Borough of Newham, London to pursue a bachelor’s degree in music psychology. From 2005 to 2010, she attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London where she earned her bachelor’s degree in acting.

In 2013, Cynthia played Celie Harris in the Menier Chocolate Factory production of “The Color Purple”. In 2015, she reprised the role in the Broadway revival transfer of the same production of the same musical, marking her Broadway debut.

Also in 2015, Cynthia appeared in an episode of the television series “Chewing Gum”. In 2018, she made her film debut in “Bad Times at the El Royale”.

In 2019, Cynthia played Harriet Tubman in the biographical film “Harriet”. In 2020, she played Holly Gibey in the HBO series “The Outsider”.

In 2023, Cynthia starred in the films “Drift” and “Luther: The Fallen Sun”. On January 8, 2024, she turned 37.
