Snit Tewoldemedhin’s stardom from Miss Africa USA 2023 to Miss Universe 2024

Snit Tewoldemedhin, 25, of Asmara, Eritrea is an Eritrean beauty queen who graduated from Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Virginia, United States and George Mason University in Washington, D.C., USA. She won Miss Africa USA before representing Eritrea in Miss Universe.

In 2019, Tewoldemedhin moved from Eritrea to the U.S. She was born and raised in Asmara and is currently based in Virginia.

Tewoldemedhin is an advocate for children with special needs, who she believes are “a blessing and not a curse,” Afrik Digest quoted her as saying. She is six years older than her sister Milka Tewoldemedhin, who was born with Down Syndrome.

From April 2019 to July 2021, Snit attended Northern Virginia Community College where she earned her associate’s degree in biology. From August 2021 to May 2023, she attended George Mason University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in neuroscience.

Snit is fluent in Italian, English and Tigrigna. She is 5’10” tall.

Launched in 2005, Miss Africa USA is regarded as the mother of African pageants in the diaspora. It encourages women to address social issues that are close to their hearts both in the U.S. and in Africa.

On March 18, 2023, Snit represented Eritrea at Miss Africa USA 2023. She competed against 13 other candidates at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Greenbelt, Maryland, USA and won the title.

Runner-up to Tewoldemedhin was Muka Chisaka of Zambia. Naomy Rodrigues of Cabo Verde was second runner-up.

On October 5, 2024, Snit competed against five other Miss Eritrea Universe 2024 finalists namely Winta Russom, Mahlet Haile, Nardos Habte Essaias, Aida Mebrahtu Russom and Rodas Kiflom Tsegay. Winta represented Eritrea at Miss Global 2022 and Miss Charm 2023.

It was Snit who won the Miss Eritrea Universe 2024 crown. This makes her the first ever Miss Universe candidate from Eritrea.

On November 16, 2024, Snit will represent Eritrea at Miss Universe 2024. She will compete against more than 120 other candidates at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico.

Eritrea is not the only country making its Miss Universe debut. Also represented for the first time are Belarus, Guinea, Iran, Macau, the Maldives, Moldova, North Macedonia, Somalia, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan.
