Fabienne Fionnuala Nicole Groeneveld, 23, of Jakarta, Indonesia was crowned Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 at the Beach City International Stadium in Jakarta on August 3, 2023. She bested 29 other candidates.
Runner-up to Groeneveld was Vina Anggi Sitorus, 24, of Sumatera Utara. The respective second, third and fourth runners-up were Muthia Fatika Rachman, 21, of Jawa Barat, Angela Yovita Lilo, of 24, Kepulauan Riau and Baby Kristami Coriesza Nauli, 26, of Jakarta.
It was the first edition of Miss Universe Indonesia. The national director is Poppy Capella, 31, who is also the national director of Miss Universe Malaysia.
Indonesia currently has eight Miss Universe placements. The Asian country was represented in the international beauty pageant by the winners of Putri Indonesia under Andy Nurhayati‘s directorship from 1974 to 1983 and Puteri Indonesia under Mooryati Soedibyo‘s directorship from 1995 to 1996 and from 2005 to 2022.
Groeneveld is supposed to represent Indonesia at Miss Universe 2023 at the Gimnasio Nacional José Adolfo Pineda in San Salvador, El Salvador on November 18, 2023. However, there is a possibility she will not be participating amid the current Miss Universe Indonesia controversy.
On August 7, 2023, six Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 candidates filed complaints against the organizers of the competition. Prior to the coronation ceremony, five of the complainants were allegedly asked to strip to their underwear for physical examinations and photographed topless in a room with more than 20 people, including men.
One of the complainants claimed that she was asked to open her legs while being photographed. Mellisa Anggraeni is representing the complainants, who are still anonymous.
On August 12, 2023, the Miss Universe Organization announced that it has decided to end Capella’s contract as the Indonesia’s Miss Universe franchise holder. The organization has yet to confirm whether or not Groeneveld will be allowed to represent Indonesia at Miss Universe 2023.
