Singapore and Costa Rica were two of the countries represented at “ONE: Call to Greatness.” It was the first ONE Championship event in 2019 to be held in Singapore.
Featuring six mixed martial arts matches, four kickboxing contests and one Muay Thai bout, “ONE: Call to Greatness” took place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore on February 22, 2019. In the 10th bout of the evening, Amir Khan, 24, of Singapore faced Ariel Sexton, 37, of Costa Rica.
Blue Corner
Sexton was 19 years old when he started his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training. He went on to earn his black belt under Renzo Gracie.
Training out of Team Daniel Gracie and Athletic Advance, Sexton made his professional MMA debut in 2006 and joined ONE Championship in 2014. “ONE: Call to Greatness” marked his seventh outing in the organization.
Red Corner
When Khan was young, he was bullied for having Tourette Syndrome. He moved from Singapore to Louisiana, United States when he was in high school and it was then that he started his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling training with Relson Gracie.
In 2014, Khan returned to Singapore and joined Evolve MMA. “ONE: Call to Greatness” marked his 15th outing in ONE Championship.
Fight Result
With Olivier Coste as the referee, Khan and Sexton competed in an MMA match in the lightweight division. It was the second bout in the quarter-finals of the inaugural ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix.
Sexton managed to survive a number of precarious situations and remained relentless in his pursuit to take the action to the ground. Early in the third round, Costa Rican submission specialist easily took Khan down and immediately fastened the submission to force his Singaporean opponent to tap.
Coste put a stop to the contest after 1 minute and 13 seconds in the third round. He raised the hand of Sexton, who won via rear-naked choke submission.
Losing to Sexton at “ONE: Call to Greatness” downgraded Khan’s professional MMA record to 11 wins and 5 losses. On the other hand, the Costa Rican contender now has 13 wins, 4 losses and 1 No Contest.
