Japanese mixed martial artist Ken Hasegawa, 31, received a warm welcome during the kick-off press conference for “ONE: Spirit of a Warrior” at the Pullman Yangon Centrepoint Hotel in Yangon, Myanmar on June 27, 2018. He is set to compete against a hometown hero for the ONE Middleweight World Championship.
Hailing from Kanagawa, Japan Hasegawa will challenge reigning ONE Middleweight and Light Heavyweight World Champion “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang, 33, of Kachin, Myanmar. They will headline “ONE: Spirit of a Warrior” at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon on June 29, 2018.
“Taking on Aung La N Sang for the middleweight title, it’s not going to be easy,” Hasegawa said. “He is a tremendous competitor and an even greater champion. But I am confident of victory and that my hand will be raised as the new champion.”
According to Hasegawa, his career inside the cage has brought him to the pinnacle of the sport, and now, to a world title shot in Asia’s largest martial arts organization. He said, “It is an honor to lend my talents to ONE Championship, and I will relish this opportunity to showcase my skills to the world and to make Japan proud.”
Aung and Hasegawa smiled at each other during the “ONE: Spirit of a Warrior” press conference. Also present during the event were ONE Championship chief commercial officer Jack Lim and Telenor Myanmar chief financial officer Yin Yin Htay.
“ONE: Spirit of a Warrior” marks Hasegawa’s ONE Championship debut. He currently holds a professional MMA record of 16 wins and 2 losses.
On the other hand, Aung has 22 wins and 10 losses. He promised, “This belt is staying in Myanmar and I will do everything in my power to protect our honor.”
“This title means a lot to me and my fans and to everyone who has supported me since day one”, Aung continued. “I will step onto the canvas this 29 June in the best shape of my career and claim victory once again in front of my friends and family back home.”
